Refuse and Other Findings
MenLo Studio, Jingdezhen, China 2024.
The following works were made at the conclusion of a one-month residency at MenLo Studio in which I began researching ceramic waste in the historic porcelain-producing city. The inspiration for the works comes from the Japanese book “How to Wrap 5 Eggs”, archetypal pottery forms, and the desire to make form from the least amount of material possible.
I found over 150 different lids discarded next to the sites of old factories. I was especially attracted to the form since a lid is seen as useless without its vessel. Upon cleaning and inspection, small defects can be found in each which deemed them seconds. To me, they are ideal for their finial which can be used for attachment. The multiples lent themselves to the creation of rhythmic textile-like forms, or improvisable, rearrangeable hanging tiles.
